Created the U.S. version of the U.K.’s largest-circulation magazine. Developed and tested an innovative editorial concept for the 50+ market (“a magazine for people who relish new experiences”), recruited a talented staff, assigned and edited articles by top-notch writers, and oversaw design and budget before market setbacks thwarted the publication’s launch. Think Research, Boston (1998–2000) Managing Editor. Managed the relaunch of IBM’s flagship magazine (formerly IBM Research) for Forbes Custom Communications Partners, creating a livelier, more accessible publication and web site. Supervised design, production, and editorial staff in day-to-day operation, edited all copy, and served as liaison to IBM. Sloan School of Management, MIT (1997–1998) Director of Publications. Edited R.O.I., Sloan’s award-winning print and online magazine. Planned the relaunch of the Sloan web site. Coordinated the creation and production of brochures, media guides, and other publications. Technology Review, MIT (1988–1997) Senior Editor. Wrote and edited wide-ranging features, reviews, and news articles for MIT’s national magazine on technology and its impact. Wrote “Phenomena,” a column of essays and satire. Issues in Science and Technology, Washington, D.C. (1987–1988) Contributing Editor. Rewrote and edited expert-written features on policy issues for the quarterly of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering. High Technology, Boston (1983–1987) Copy Editor. Did the final edit on all copy for this sister publication of Inc. Established house style, wrote heads and captions, supervised two assistants.
